Winter Weather Safety Tips
Wind chill is simply a combination of cold temperature combined with wind. The movement of air carries heat away from your body or extremities much faster than in calm conditions.
The National Weather Service will issue wind chill advisories and warnings when forecast wind chills. A wind chill of minus 35 degrees F can occur with outside temperatures of 10 above zero with a 30mph wind, and can freeze exposed skin in a matter of minutes. These conditions are not unheard of in the central U.S.
Once air temperatures drop below zero, it takes very little wind to create dangerous wind chills.
● Monitor weather forecasts for winds and temperature.
● Wear appropriate winter attire- dress in layers. Wear insulating gloves/mittens.
● Cover up all exposed skin including face in extreme conditions.
● Watch one another for signs of frostbite- whitish patches.
● Take frequent breaks to warm up.
● When wind chill warnings are issued, consider cancelling outdoor activities.
